                            ARTICLES (A, An, The)

1. Definition

Articles are words used before nouns to limit or define their meaning.
There are three articles in English:

2. Indefinite Articles (A / An)

(A) Use of A

Used before:

✔ Examples:

  • a boy

  • a girl

  • a university (yu sound)

  • a European

  • a one-rupee coin (w sound)

(B) Use of An

Used before:

  • Singular countable nouns

  • Words starting with a vowel sound

  1. To refer to something for the first time

    • I saw a dog.

  2. To show profession

  1. When a noun is specific or known

    • I bought a book. The book is interesting.

  2. Before unique objects

  3. Before rivers, seas, oceans

  4. Before mountain ranges, groups of islands

  5. Before holy books

  6. Before superlative degree

    • the best boy

    • the tallest building

  7. Before musical instruments

  8. Before adjectives used as nouns

5. Omission of Articles (Zero Article)

No article is used:

  1. Before proper nouns

    • Ram is my friend.

  2. Before languages

    • She speaks English.

  3. Before meals

    • I take breakfast at 8 a.m.

  4. Before games/sports

    • He plays cricket.

  5. Before plural countable nouns (general sense)

    • Boys are playing.
